Overview

This 60-minute lesson is lesson 5 of 10 in the unit Exploring Diverse Music Cultures for Year 10 students. It supports deep engagement with song lyrics to uncover cultural themes and messages, aligned to the New Zealand Curriculum Refresh. Students will analyse lyrics, discuss cultural content, and create original lyrics addressing contemporary cultural issues.

		- Groups use guided questions (e.g., What cultural themes do you notice? What messages does the song communicate?) with sentence starters to scaffold thinking.
		- Teacher circulates to support and prompt deeper analysis (see differentiation below).
25-35m	Sharing: Group presentations and class discussion	- Groups share one key theme/message uncovered. Class discusses how these relate to culture and personal experience.
		- Encourage respectful listening and acknowledge varying interpretations.
35-50m	Creating: Write original lyrics addressing a contemporary cultural issue	- Students individually or in pairs write their own short lyrics inspired by themes discussed (e.g., identity, belonging, social justice).
		- Provide sentence starters and word banks for scaffolding.
		- Advanced learners encouraged to incorporate figurative language or metaphors.
50-60m	Reflection and exit task	- Voluntary sharing of lyric excerpts to class. Reflect on how lyrics can express cultural identity and messages.
		- Exit question: “What new cultural understanding did you gain from analysing and creating lyrics today?”

Guided Question Sheets & Sentence Starters: Help structure analysis for students needing support.
Dyslexia-Friendly Texts: Larger fonts, clear spacing, and contrast for easier reading.
Pair or Small Group Work: Foster peer support and confidence for reluctant learners.
Teacher prompts: Scaffold critical thinking with probing questions such as "What feelings does this lyric evoke?" "Whose perspective is this?"

Extension for Advanced Learners

Compose a full original song incorporating a cultural theme, using advanced poetic devices like metaphor, simile, or symbolism.
Research a music culture not covered in class and select a song to bring and analyse in a future lesson.
