Lesson structure (45 minutes)

  1. 0–5 min · Hook and notice. Teacher displays a map showing a short route and asks, “How could we work out the real distance without walking it?” using the opening map mystery slide. Students make an estimate, discuss what information they would need and share ideas with a partner.

  2. 5–13 min · Symbols and legends. Teacher uses the map symbols and legend slides to introduce a legend as a map key, modelling how to match symbols with features such as roads, rivers, parks and buildings. Students identify symbols on the displayed map and explain how the legend helps the reader.

  3. 13–22 min · Teach scale. Teacher models a simple scale, for example, “1 cm on the map represents 1 km in real life”. Measure a 4 cm route and think aloud: 4 × 1 km = 4 km. Then model a scale of “1 cm represents 2 km”, highlighting that the map measurement must be multiplied by 2. Students solve two examples on mini-whiteboards and explain the operation used.

  4. 22–35 min · Paired map investigation. Teacher distributes the maps and scale investigation worksheet to pairs and reminds students to measure from the centre of each location or along the marked route. Students use the legends, rulers and stated scales to identify features, measure routes, calculate real distances and record their working. They compare answers with another pair and check whether their answers are reasonable.

  5. 35–41 min · Reasoning discussion. Teacher returns to the investigation discussion slides and presents two possible answers for one route, including one with an incorrect scale calculation. Students decide which answer is correct, justify their decision and explain how changing the scale changes the represented distance.

  6. 41–45 min · Exit check and recap. Teacher displays the final reflection slide and asks students to complete the final question on their worksheet: “A map route is 6 cm long. The scale is 1 cm = 3 km. What is the real distance, and how do you know?” Students submit their answer and share one sentence explaining the purpose of scale.
