Teaching Instructions

I want a handwriting lesson that covers 4 days. Using casey Catipillar prompts to make it easy for learners. Please put similar letter groupings together.

Mastering Handwriting

Overview

This lesson will utilise the Casey Caterpillar program to teach Year 2-3 students the foundational skills of handwriting. Over a span of 4 days, students will practise letter formation, focusing on similar letter groupings to reinforce learning. This lesson plan aligns with the New Zealand Curriculum, specifically aligning with the Level 1 English learning area.

Curriculum Area

English - Level 1

Learning Objectives

  • Understand and correctly form individual letters of the alphabet.
  • Recognise letter groupings and their related movements.
  • Develop fine motor skills required for handwriting.

Materials Needed

  • Casey Caterpillar handwriting prompts
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Lined handwriting paper
  • Pencils and erasers

Day 1: Introduction to Casey Caterpillar and Curly Caterpillar Letters

Learning Outcome:

Students will learn to form the curly caterpillar letters: c, a, d, g, q, o.

  1. Introduction (2 minutes): Introduce the Casey Caterpillar story to the class. Explain how Casey teaches us to make letters using different caterpillar shapes.
  2. Modelling (3 minutes): Show on the whiteboard how the curly caterpillar shape is used to write the letters c, a, d, g, q, and o.
  3. Practice (5 minutes):
    • Hand out lined paper and pencils.
    • Guide students as they practise each letter, starting with 'c' and progressively moving to the other letters.

Day 2: More Curly Caterpillar Letters and Straight Line Letters

Learning Outcome:

Students will revise the curly caterpillar letters and learn to form straight line letters: l, i, t, u, y, j.

  1. Revision (2 minutes): Quickly review the curly caterpillar letters from Day 1.
  2. Modelling (3 minutes): Demonstrate how to write the straight line letters l, i, t, u, y, j on the whiteboard using the Casey Caterpillar technique.
  3. Practice (5 minutes):
    • Engage students in forming the straight line letters on their lined paper.
    • Walk around to provide individual feedback.

Day 3: Zigzag Monster Letters

Learning Outcome:

Students will learn to form the zigzag monster letters: v, w, x, z.

  1. Revision (2 minutes): Recap the straight line letters learnt on Day 2.
  2. Modelling (3 minutes): Show how to create the zigzag monster letters v, w, x, z using the whiteboard.
  3. Practice (5 minutes):
    • Students will practice writing these letters, focusing on maintaining the correct zigzag pattern.
    • Provide assistance and encouragement as necessary.

Day 4: Ladder Letters and Review

Learning Outcome:

Students will learn to form the ladder letters: h, k, m, n, r, p, b and review all previous letters.

  1. Review (2 minutes): Quick review of curly caterpillar, straight line, and zigzag monster letters.
  2. Modelling (3 minutes): Demonstrate ladder letters h, k, m, n, r, p, b on the whiteboard.
  3. Practice (5 minutes):
    • Have students practice the ladder letters.
    • Spend the remaining time allowing students to write words using the letters they've learned (e.g., cat, dog, him, run).

Assessment

  • Observe students as they write to ensure correct letter formation.
  • Provide immediate feedback and support as needed.
  • Collect handwriting samples at the end of Day 4 to assess progress and provide individual comments.

Reflection

At the end of the week, reflect on the lesson’s effectiveness. Note which letters students struggled with and which were mastered quickly. Use this information to plan future handwriting lessons or additional practice sessions.

By incorporating the engaging Casey Caterpillar prompts, we can make learning handwriting a fun and memorable experience for Year 2-3 students in New Zealand.
