In this second lesson of Navigating Fake Online Information, students investigate how misleading or false information spreads online. They compare social media, deepfake technology and fake news websites, then analyse each mechanism’s features, purpose, audience and potential impact.

Lesson structure (45 minutes)

  1. 0–5 min · Hook and retrieval. Open with the provocative opening question and retrieval prompt: “If a post has thousands of likes, is it more likely to be true?” Students vote individually, justify their choice to a partner and recall one reliability check from the previous lesson. Explain that popularity and truth are not the same thing.

  2. 5–13 min · Direct teaching: three mechanisms. Use the mechanism overview slides to introduce:

  • Social media: rapid sharing, recommendation algorithms, emotionally engaging headlines, reposting without checking and echo chambers.
  • Deepfake technology: AI-generated or altered video, audio or images that imitate real people or events; convincing appearance does not prove authenticity.
  • Fake news websites: websites designed to resemble legitimate news sources, using copied logos, invented stories, misleading headlines, adverts or unclear authorship. Briefly distinguish misinformation (false information shared by mistake), disinformation (false information shared deliberately) and malinformation (true information shared to cause harm). Emphasise that students should not search for or share harmful examples.
  1. 13–17 min · Modelled analysis. Display the worked example in the teacher think-aloud example. Model a “TRACE” check: Type of content, Reliability of source, Audience and purpose, Cues in language or visuals, Effect on people. Think aloud using a fictional post about a celebrity promoting a miracle product. Students identify one clue that would require further checking.

  2. 17–32 min · Paired investigation. Distribute the three-mechanism analysis worksheet to pairs. Each pair analyses three short, fictional case studies: a viral social media claim, an altered celebrity video and a fake news webpage. For each, students record the mechanism, how it spreads, clues about credibility, likely purpose, intended audience and possible impact. Circulate and ask: “What makes this content easy to believe?” and “Who benefits if people share it?” Students must use evidence from the case study rather than simply labelling it “fake”.

  3. 32–39 min · Group comparison. Place pairs into groups of four. Use the comparison and discussion prompts. Students compare findings and rank the mechanisms from “easiest to notice” to “hardest to notice”, giving reasons. Groups discuss which response is safest: pause, check the source, compare with trusted reporting, reverse-check an image where appropriate, and avoid forwarding uncertain content. Invite two groups to share contrasting rankings.

  4. 39–45 min · Plenary and assessment. Return to the opening question using the plenary prompt. Students complete the final section of the individual exit response: “Choose one mechanism. Explain how it spreads, give two warning signs, and state one action a responsible user should take.” Collect responses and preview the next lesson: evaluating the credibility of specific online claims.
