Lesson structure (20 minutes)

  1. 0–3 min · Hook and readiness. Teacher opens the multiplication hook slide and asks, “Which is faster: remembering 6 × 7, or building it from a fact you already know?” Students silently solve 6 × 7, show their answer with fingers or a mini-whiteboard, then name one fact they know quickly.

  2. 3–6 min · Strategy model. Teacher uses the strategy examples to model 6 × 7 as 5 × 7 + 1 × 7, and 4 × 6 as two shared groups of 2 × 6. Emphasise that speed comes from choosing a useful known fact, not from guessing or rushing. Student explains one model in their own words.

  3. 6–11 min · One-to-one fact sprint. Teacher gives the multiplication fluency and strategy sheet and displays the instructions on the practice instructions: complete the first set of facts for three minutes, recording a strategy beside two answers. Student solves as many as possible accurately, using known facts, doubling, halving or breaking apart.

  4. 11–15 min · Shared-groups challenge. Teacher displays the shared-groups challenge and presents: “24 counters are shared equally into 4 groups. How many are in each group? How does this connect to 4 × 6?” Draw four equal circles or use counters if needed, then connect the sharing statement to multiplication and division. Student represents the problem, states 24 ÷ 4 = 6 and explains how it relates to 4 × 6 = 24.

  5. 15–18 min · Think-fast, explain-clearly round. Teacher reveals the three challenge prompts on the reasoning round one at a time: “If 7 × 8 = 56, what is 8 × 7?”, “If 5 × 6 = 30, what is 10 × 6?”, and “How could you solve 9 × 6 without counting in ones?” Allow thinking time, then ask the student to answer and justify each strategy orally or with a quick sketch.

  6. 18–20 min · Exit reflection. Teacher returns to the final reflection slide and asks the student to complete the final box on the worksheet: “One fact I know more quickly is… One strategy I used was…” Check the response together and celebrate accuracy, useful strategies and persistence rather than the number completed.
