Overview

Year 3 students will use a short nature walk to observe carefully and sketch details, then turn their observations into a simple nature-inspired design. They will connect this to how inventors copy ideas from nature.

Learning intentions

WALT:

  • Observe nature closely and draw detailed sketches.
  • Select features from nature that could inspire a design.
  • Explain how nature-inspired ideas could help solve a problem.
  • Use technology processes to plan and create a simple product.

  • Draw at least 3 sketches showing noticeable details (shape, pattern, texture or colour).
  • Label one sketch with the feature I want to use as inspiration.
  • Describe one way an inventor might copy that feature to design something useful.
  • Create a final nature-inspired artwork/design using my sketches.

  3. 10–30 min · Nature walk and sketching. Teacher sets boundaries and reminders for safe walking and respectful collecting. Students find and sketch 3 different natural objects, focusing on one “detail focus” each time (texture, pattern, shape, colour).

  4. 30–38 min · Technology link: “Nature copied.” Teacher leads a discussion: “Inventors copy ideas from nature.” Prompts: “What problem could nature help with?” Students choose one sketch and write a short statement: “I think an inventor could copy the ___ to make a ___.”

  5. 38–47 min · Create: Nature-inspired design/artwork. Teacher explains the product is a design idea poster or 2D artwork that shows: inspiration sketch, labelled feature, and a simple invented version (drawing). Students create their nature-inspired artwork using pencil/colour and add labels.
