Overview

Students investigate how line, shape, pattern and contrast can create an optical illusion. They view examples, experiment with a simple curved-line technique, then design an Op Art drawing that appears to bend, move or become three-dimensional.

Lesson structure (30 minutes)

  1. 0–4 min · Hook and noticing. Display the optical illusion hook slide showing a bold Op Art image with the question, “Is the picture moving, or is your brain interpreting the lines?” Students silently observe, then share what they notice about line, spacing, shape, contrast and apparent movement.

  2. 4–8 min · Demonstration and vocabulary. Use the technique and vocabulary slides to introduce Op Art, repetition, pattern, contrast, curved lines, foreground and background. Demonstrate drawing a large simple shape, such as a circle or letter, across the page, then adding evenly spaced curved lines that continue across the shape and background. Model how closer lines can make an area look compressed and wider gaps can make it look expanded.

  3. 8–11 min · Guided experiment. Distribute the Op Art experiment sheet. Students complete two small practice boxes: one using straight or zigzag lines and one using curved lines around a shape. Pause to ask, “Which version looks more like it is moving? What changed when the spacing changed?” Students compare ideas with a partner.

  4. 11–23 min · Independent artwork. Reopen the step-by-step drawing slides as a visual reminder. Students create an Op Art drawing on the worksheet or drawing paper: choose a large central shape, add a repeated line or pattern across the whole page, and carefully adapt the lines inside the shape to suggest bending or depth. They may use black and white for maximum contrast or add two contrasting colours. Circulate, prompt precision and encourage students to test ideas rather than erase every imperfection.

  5. 23–27 min · Gallery response. Display the peer-response prompt slide and place artworks on tables. Students move quietly in pairs, viewing several drawings. Each student chooses one artwork and gives specific feedback using the prompts: “My eye moved towards…”, “The illusion is strongest where…”, and “One change that could make the effect clearer is…”

  6. 27–30 min · Plenary and reflection. Return to the final reflection slide. Students hold up or point to the part of their artwork that creates the strongest illusion, then complete the reflection on the self-assessment and exit reflection: name one visual choice, describe its effect, and identify one next step.

  • Provide dyslexia-friendly instructions on the worksheet: clear sans-serif font, large text, short numbered steps, strong contrast, uncluttered spacing and diagrams alongside written directions. Read instructions aloud and allow students to explain responses orally.
