Overview

Lesson structure (60 minutes)

  1. 0–5 min · Hook and purpose. Teacher displays two images or samples of contrasting biscuit/pastry bases and opens the comparison hook slide, asking, “Which base would best support our hybrid dessert, and what evidence would we need?” Students make an initial prediction and identify desirable attributes such as crispness, strength, flavour or appearance.

  2. 5–12 min · Trial briefing and safety.   3. 12–18 min · Planning the investigation. Teacher models a fair-test table on the fair trial planning slide, distinguishing the independent variable, controlled variables and observations to record. Students select one variable, write a prediction, allocate roles (equipment, ingredients, preparation, timing and recording), and confirm quantities and method before beginning.

  4. 18–40 min · Practical trial. Teacher circulates, checks hygiene and safe technique, questions teams about their chosen variable, and manages oven access and timing. Students prepare, shape and cook the base, recording measurements, process changes and observations on the base trial record; while waiting, they complete the predicted outcome and note how heat may change the mixture’s texture, colour and structure.

  5. 40–50 min · Evaluate and compare. Teacher signals clean-down, then uses the sensory evaluation and comparison slides to remind students to assess the base respectfully using agreed criteria rather than personal preference alone. Students inspect and, where appropriate, taste a cooled sample, record evidence for colour, texture, flavour, shape, strength and suitability for the hybrid dessert, then compare results with another team.

  6. 50–57 min · Optimisation decision. Teacher models an evidence-based recommendation: “Because…, I would…, so that…”. Students complete the evaluation section of the base trial record, deciding whether to keep, modify or reject their variable and proposing one precise change for the next prototype.

  7. 57–60 min · Plenary and exit check. Teacher returns to the final reflection slide and asks teams to share one useful finding. Students submit or photograph their worksheet and answer verbally or on the final line: “What evidence shows whether your base is fit for purpose, and what will you change next time?”
