Lesson Breakdown

1. Warm-Up Discussion (5 mins)

Teacher Prompt: “Think about the places you visit in your neighbourhood. Where do you go with your family?”

• Use think-pair-share to allow students to discuss their favourite community places.
• Write key words on the board: 'school', 'park', 'shops', 'library', 'hospital'.

2. Introducing the Local Map (10 mins)

• Display a simple map of the local area (printed or projected).
• Ask students to identify familiar places.
• Model how to read simple map symbols (e.g., a tree for a park, a cart for shops).

Interactive Activity:

• Show picture flashcards of community places.
• Have students come up and match the flashcard to the correct spot on the map.

3. Mapping Our Own Community (15 mins)

• Provide each student with a blank grid map.
• Guide students in drawing a few key locations they know (e.g., home, school, playground).
