Teaching Instructions

This is our second lesson of European handball we covered the basics of the game, but I would like to continue working on passing and shooting today.

Overview

In this second European handball lesson, students build on their understanding of the basic rules and movement patterns of the game. They refine passing accuracy, receiving on the move and shooting with correct body positioning, then apply these skills in small-sided attacking situations.

Learning intentions

  • WALT pass and receive accurately while moving.
  • WALT use appropriate body position and technique when shooting.
  • WALT create space and make effective attacking decisions.
  • WALT communicate and work cooperatively during game play.

Success criteria

  • I can pass to a teammate’s space using control, accuracy and appropriate force.
  • I can receive with soft hands, move into space and look up before passing.
  • I can shoot using a balanced stance, aiming towards an open area of the goal.
  • I can support my team by communicating and making purposeful attacking movements.

Curriculum links

  • Physical Education / Movement skills (Invasion games): advanced outfield skills, offensive tactics, specific terminology and body positioning.
  • Physical Education / Personal exercise plan: applying SPORT principles to adapt and refine training approaches.
  • Health and Physical Education: developing interpersonal skills, cooperation, communication and responsible participation.

Lesson structure (50 minutes)

  1. 0–5 min · Welcome and safety briefing. Teacher checks footwear, jewellery, court boundaries and safe use of space, then explains that today’s focus is accurate passing followed by purposeful shooting. Students listen, identify a safe passing distance and move to their assigned group.

  2. 5–12 min · Dynamic warm-up with passing. Teacher organises seven groups of four, each with one ball, and leads jogging, side-stepping, high knees and changes of direction; on the signal, the player with the ball passes to a moving teammate. Students keep their heads up, call names, move after passing and use chest or bounce passes where appropriate.

Coaching cues: hands ready, step towards the target, follow through, pass to space and move immediately.

  1. 12–22 min · Passing and receiving circuit. Teacher sets up four stations so groups rotate after two minutes: passing while moving, give-and-go passing around a cone, passing to a player entering space and receiving before turning towards goal. Students complete each station and focus on one technical improvement at a time.

Pause briefly after the second station to ask: “How can you help a teammate receive successfully?” Emphasise leading the receiver, passing away from defenders and communicating early.

  1. 22–32 min · Shooting technique and decision making. Teacher demonstrates a standing shot and a three-step jump shot without a defender, highlighting eyes on the target, non-throwing shoulder facing the goal, arm high, balanced landing and safe spacing. Students work in pairs: one passes from the side while the other receives, takes permitted steps, chooses a target area and shoots; partners collect safely and swap roles.

Progress the task by adding a passive defender who holds an arm up. The attacker must decide whether to shoot, pass back or move to a better angle. Reinforce that power is less important than control, accuracy and a safe landing.

  1. 32–45 min · Small-sided attack game. Teacher creates four courts and runs 4 v 3 games, with one team waiting as rotating defenders or substitutes. Teams attack towards a goal and must complete at least three passes before shooting. Award an extra point when a team creates space with a clear give-and-go or when a shot follows effective off-ball movement.

Students apply passing and shooting under pressure, communicate, spread out, move the ball quickly and defend without pushing, grabbing or entering the goal area. Rotate roles every three minutes so all students experience attacking, defending and observing.

  1. 45–50 min · Cool-down and reflection. Teacher leads slow walking, breathing and stretches, then asks students to reflect on their performance. Students complete a quick verbal exit response to a partner: “One passing choice I made well was…” and “Next time I will improve my shooting by…”.

Resources

  • European handballs, one per group or court
  • Cones to mark stations, courts and safe waiting areas
  • Four goals or clearly marked target zones
  • Coloured bibs for teams
  • Whistle and stopwatch
  • Whiteboard with passing and shooting cues
  • First-aid kit and drinking-water access

Assessment

  • Observe whether students step towards the target, pass to space, move after passing and communicate.
  • During shooting, check body position, controlled take-off and landing, target selection and decision making when a defender is present.
  • Use the partner reflection to identify one demonstrated strength and one individual next step for the following lesson.

Differentiation

  • Support students by reducing passing distance, using a larger or softer ball, allowing a stationary receiver and marking clear target zones in the goal.
  • Provide a demonstration before each task and use the cues “look, step, pass” and “balance, aim, follow through”. Pair students thoughtfully and allow extra processing time for students who need it.
  • For EAL learners, demonstrate key terms such as space, support, receive, defender and shoot, while pairing each word with a gesture or visual cue.
  • Extend confident students by requiring weaker-side passing, quicker ball movement, a time limit for attacking, or a pass-and-move combination before every shot. Encourage them to explain how their movement created an option for the ball carrier.
