• Begin with a finger dexterity exercise (e.g., basic chromatic runs) to improve agility.

• Tune the instrument by ear first, then confirm with a digital tuner.

2. Introduction to Major Pentatonic in CAGED (5 min)

• Briefly discuss the CAGED system as a method for navigating the fretboard.
• Demonstrate the C major pentatonic scale and ask ākonga to describe its sound (bright, open, melodic).
• Introduce the five scale shapes and explain how each pattern overlaps across the neck.

3. Hands-On Exploration of Scale Shapes (7 min)

• Start with Shape 1 (C position) and ensure ākonga can play it ascending and descending smoothly.
• Move through each of the five shapes sequentially, connecting them melodically.
• Use call-and-response: tutor plays a short phrase; ākonga repeats using the correct shape.

4. Application: Improvisation & Composition (10 min)

• Jam session: Play a C major backing track and have ākonga improvise using only the pentatonic shapes.
• Encourage dynamic variation (soft/loud notes) and phrase development (call-and-response within a solo).
• Introduce a simple challenge: Compose a four-bar melody using only the C major pentatonic scale.

5. Reflection & Next Steps (3 min)

• Discuss how the major pentatonic scale differs from the full major scale (i.e., removal of the 4th and 7th scale degrees).
• Recap learning: Ask ākonga, "How would you use major pentatonic in songwriting?"
