Lesson structure (45 minutes)

  1. 0–5 minutes – Reconnect and introduce the field task. Open with the playground hook and learning goals. Ask: “How can we collect evidence without changing the playground or putting anyone at risk?” Briefly revisit pushes, pulls, gravity, slope, surface, speed, distance and stability using familiar examples.

  2. 5–10 minutes – Safety briefing and team roles. Show the safety rules and team roles. Explain boundaries, walking rules, waiting turns, checking equipment before use, staying with the group and stopping immediately when signalled. Assign groups of four or five roles: safety watcher, sketcher, measurer/recorder and reporter. Students may observe from beside equipment if climbing, movement or sensory needs make participation unsuitable.

  3. 10–13 minutes – Explain the evidence hunt. Model one observation: “The slide slopes down. Gravity helps the person move down. The smooth surface allows movement.” Demonstrate how to distinguish an observation from a guess. Distribute the playground evidence log and explain that students will complete selected sections at different stations rather than rush to fill every box.

  4. 13–30 minutes – Team observation stations. At the playground, teams rotate or choose three safe observation points: one piece of equipment, one slope or ramp, and two different surfaces. They sketch and label equipment, identify pushes and pulls, note gravity and slopes, and compare surfaces. They record examples of movement, approximate speed using words such as slow or fast, distance using steps or a tape measure where appropriate, and stability using observations such as steady, wobbly or balanced. Adults prompt with: “What did you notice?” “What evidence supports that?” and “What would make this comparison fair?”

  5. 30–37 minutes – Evidence-sharing circle. Bring students together in a safe meeting area and show the evidence-sharing prompts. Each team shares one observation and one possible design implication, such as “A rougher surface may slow movement” or “A wider base may make equipment more stable.” Invite other students to identify whether each statement is an observation, an explanation or a design idea.

  6. 37–42 minutes – Individual design connection. Students complete the final section of the playground evidence log: “The most useful evidence for our design is…” and “We should consider…” Encourage labelled sketches or oral responses recorded by an adult or peer. Students check that their evidence is based on what they actually observed.

  7. 42–45 minutes – Plenary and pack-up. Use the reflection and return-to-school slide. Ask students to share one force, movement feature or surface observation they will use in the next design lesson. Check that all equipment and worksheets are collected, then return safely to class.
