Lesson structure (45 minutes)

  1. 0–5 minutes – Reconnect and wonder Display the opening images in the playground comparison deck. Ask: “Why would the same playground not work equally well everywhere?” Invite quick observations about shade, rain, wind, ground surfaces, available space and who might use each playground. Remind students that good design begins by listening to people and noticing place.

  2. 5–13 minutes – Compare places and needs Show the comparison slides in the playground comparison deck. Discuss two or three contrasting settings, such as a rainy town, a hot sunny area, a small urban space or a coastal community. Model the sentence: “Because this place has ___, designers chose ___.” Include local whenua respectfully: playgrounds are located on particular land and should care for people, place and the environment.

  3. 13–20 minutes – Design choices mini-lesson Use the design-feature slides in the playground comparison deck. Explain that engineers consider climate, materials, space, cost, safety, accessibility, culture and community preferences together. Clarify that accessibility means offering different ways to join in, such as ramps, wide pathways, quiet spaces, low climbing options, supportive seats or activities that do not require running or climbing. Introduce the design test: “Does it fit the place? Does it help people belong? Is it safe?”

  4. 20–32 minutes – Adapt the playground Distribute the local playground adaptation sheet. Students work in pairs, using their existing playground design from earlier lessons. They choose a local context and add or change at least three features. On the sheet they draw and label changes, then explain how each responds to place, materials, community needs, varied abilities or safety. Encourage partners to take turns as designer and community tester.

  5. 32–38 minutes – Peer feedback Display the feedback prompts in the playground comparison deck. Pairs swap designs with another pair and give two stars and one suggestion orally: “This supports belonging because…”, “This is suited to our place because…”, and “Have you considered…?” Students make one improvement after listening. Reinforce respectful feedback and the idea that designs improve through testing.

  6. 38–43 minutes – Share design reasoning Invite three or four pairs to present one change and its reason. Prompt students to use evidence from the local context: “We chose ___ because ___.” Ask the class whether the feature supports safe participation for more than one type of user.

  7. 43–45 minutes – Plenary and collect evidence Return to the final question in the playground comparison deck: “How can a playground help people feel that they belong?” Students complete the final sentence on the local playground adaptation sheet: “Our design shows manaakitanga by…” Collect sheets for assessment and preview that the next lesson will test and refine designs further.
