Lesson structure (60 minutes)

  1. 0–7 minutes – Hook and noticing

Ask: “Which one teaches you more quickly, and what makes it work?” Discuss how scientists, conservation groups and travellers use images and words to communicate.

  1. 7–15 minutes – Teach the design tools

Use the slides to introduce five design choices: colour can suggest mood or importance; shapes and symbols can organise meaning; layout guides the eye; typography affects readability; and images should support, not replace, accurate information. Model a simple field-guide panel about a fictional creature inspired by a local New Zealand habitat. Think aloud while choosing a title, habitat fact, adaptation, map or symbol, and conservation message.

  1. 15–22 minutes – Choose purpose and audience

Together, assess the work against clarity, accuracy, visual balance and explanation. The student identifies one successful feature and makes one quick edit if needed, such as enlarging a heading, correcting a fact or reducing unnecessary decoration.

  1. 57–60 minutes – Plenary and next step

Use the final slide prompt: “How can a picture help people care for a place or living thing?” The student gives a short answer and names one improvement to carry into Lesson 16, where the unit’s communication products can be shared, compared or refined.
