Lesson structure (60 minutes)

  1. 0–7 minutes – Reconnect and explore the model Open with the hook and report model slides. Ask: “How can a reader tell that this is a scientific report rather than a Pokémon story?” Read the short model report together and identify its introduction, section headings, evidence, labelled diagram and conclusion. Briefly explain that scientific reports should distinguish observed or researched evidence from imaginative ideas.

  2. 7–15 minutes – Plan the report Give the student the Pokémon scientific report planner and editing checklist. During a planning conference, help the student choose an original or researched Pokémon and clarify the focus: body features, habitat, diet, movement, life cycle, adaptations or environmental needs. The student records a report title, audience, three or four sections, useful evidence and a possible conclusion.

  3. 15–28 minutes – Draft the informative report The student drafts independently, with discussion and prompting as needed. Encourage a factual introduction, clear headings, topic sentences and explanations such as “This feature helps the Pokémon to…” or “Evidence suggests…” Remind the student to include at least five relevant terms, such as habitat, adaptation, organism, predator, prey, camouflage, environment, behaviour or survival.   4. 28–38 minutes – Add and explain the diagram The student creates a neat scientific diagram of the Pokémon, labelling important structures or features and adding brief function notes.   5. 38–48 minutes – Edit and publish Work through the Pokémon scientific report planner and editing checklist together. The student checks logical order, paragraphing, spelling, punctuation, accurate scientific vocabulary, evidence, labelled diagrams and a conclusion that answers the report’s main focus. Make improvements in a different colour, then publish the final report neatly by hand or using a presentation tool. If digitally publishing, discuss suitable font size, spacing and image placement.

  6. 48–56 minutes – Rehearse the family presentation Open the presentation rehearsal and speaking prompts. The student gives a two- to three-minute presentation using the published report as a visual support. Practise speaking loudly and clearly, looking up regularly, explaining the diagram and answering one question. Give one specific strength and one next step, then rehearse the improved section.

  7. 56–60 minutes – Reflect and prepare to share Use the final reflection and family-sharing slide to review the success criteria. The student states one scientific idea learned, one communication skill improved and one question they would like to investigate next. Set the expectation for a family presentation: introduce the Pokémon, explain its scientific features, show the diagram and finish with the conclusion.
