Overview

In this ninth lesson of Crafting with Joints: Box Design, students prepare the classroom work area for safe, efficient project execution. Lesson structure (50 minutes)

  1. 0–5 min · Hook and retrieval. Display the workshop hook and retrieval prompt showing a messy workstation beside a well-organised one. Ask, “Which student is more likely to work safely and produce an accurate box, and why?” Students quietly identify three differences, then share with a partner and connect them to previous learning about measuring, cutting, and joining.

  2. 5–13 min · Safety briefing. Use the safety and workflow slides to revisit expectations for movement, tool handling, shared materials, dust or offcuts, and reporting damage. Model a quick “stop, assess, control” routine: stop the task, identify the hazard, and choose a control such as removing an obstruction, wearing required protection, or asking for help. Students complete the hazard-and-control section of the workshop preparation worksheet using two examples from the demonstration.

  3. 13–23 min · Model an efficient workstation. Demonstrate a workstation using the available tools and box components. Think aloud while positioning the project, measuring tools, cutting or joining tools, waste container, safety equipment, and completed-work area. Deliberately include three problems, such as a trailing ruler, hidden sharp tool, and mixed-up materials. Students use the worksheet to label what should change and justify one improvement to a partner.

  4. 23–35 min · Team layout challenge. Refer to the workstation challenge instructions and place students in five groups of four. Each group is assigned a bench or work zone and must create a practical layout using the materials provided, leaving clear access and a designated place for waste and unfinished work. Students sketch their proposed layout on the worksheet, allocate responsibilities, and prepare a 30-second explanation of how their arrangement supports safety, efficiency, and accuracy.

  5. 35–43 min · Set up and inspect. Students put their agreed layout into practice without beginning construction. The teacher circulates with the worksheet checklist, asking: “What will you need first?”, “Where will sharp or hazardous items go?”, and “How will another group know where your project belongs?” Each group completes a peer inspection of a neighbouring workstation and gives one specific commendation and one improvement suggestion.

  6. 43–48 min · Workflow rehearsal. Show the workflow rehearsal and discussion prompt. Students rehearse the agreed sequence: collect only what is needed, check the plan and measurements, complete one operation safely, pause for quality control, manage waste, and return resources. Groups explain where a quality-control pause should occur before cutting, joining, or finishing their box.

  7. 48–50 min · Exit reflection and reset. Students complete the final reflection on the workshop preparation worksheet: “One change that will make our work safer or more efficient is…” and “One routine I will follow next lesson is…”. Groups return shared resources, leave benches clear, and stand behind their work area for a final teacher check.
