Lesson structure (50 minutes)

  1. 0–5 min · Reconnect and hook. Open with the opening project scenario and ask, “What could happen if a box maker leaves sanding, joining, and testing until the final day?” Students briefly discuss a project that became rushed or disorganised, then share one possible consequence.

  2. 5–13 min · Teach the planning tools. Use the timeline and milestone examples to model the difference between a task, a milestone, a time estimate, and a dependency. Think aloud while sequencing: design decision → measure and mark → cut components → prepare joints → assemble → test → refine. Students suggest which tasks must happen before others and record two key terms on their worksheet.

  3. 13–20 min · Analyse a sample plan. Display the deliberately flawed sample timeline and distribute the project timeline planning worksheet. In pairs, students identify at least three problems, such as unrealistic timings, missing testing, or assembling before components are prepared. Take feedback and clarify that a useful plan can be changed when evidence or circumstances change.

  4. 20–35 min · Create an individual timeline. Students complete the worksheet for their own box design. They list the remaining development tasks, order them, estimate the time required, and mark at least three milestones, including a completed joint or assembly, a test, and a refined final outcome. Circulate and conference with students, asking, “What must be finished before this can begin?” and “Where have you allowed time to fix a problem?”

  5. 35–43 min · Peer review and revise. Use the peer-review prompts to guide a structured exchange. Partners check whether the plan is logical, achievable, and detailed enough for another person to follow. Students give one strength and one specific improvement, then revise their timeline in a different colour.

  6. 43–50 min · Share and exit check. Invite two or three students to explain a planning decision and a likely risk. Finish with the plenary questions: “Which milestone gives you the strongest evidence of progress?” and “What will you adjust if you fall behind?” Students complete the final reflection on the worksheet before handing it in.
