Lesson structure (120 minutes)

  1. 0–10 min · Project hook and retrieval. Teacher opens the project-planning hook and retrieval slides with a visual of a disrupted infrastructure project and asks, “What happens when a project starts without a workable plan?” Students individually list three consequences, then compare with a partner and connect their ideas to previous learning about constraints, stakeholders and fitness for purpose.

  2. 10–30 min · Direct teaching: planning tools. Teacher uses the planning-tools teaching slides to model a project breakdown, comparing a brainstorm, action plan, Gantt chart, flow diagram and risk/resource register; explicitly distinguish selecting a tool from using it effectively and efficiently. Students annotate the project planning organiser by matching each tool to its purpose, strengths, limitations and most appropriate project stage.

  3. 30–45 min · Model a complete plan. Teacher demonstrates planning a small infrastructure project, such as improving a school storage or access area, showing how to move from the brief to specifications, task sequence, dependencies, resources, tolerances, safety controls, quality checks and review points. Students identify where the model plan responds to stakeholders, available resources, the physical environment and likely project risks, recording two questions for the project team.

  4. 45–80 min · Collaborative planning challenge. Teacher places students in five groups of five and assigns each group an infrastructure project scenario from the scenario and planning-task slides. Each group selects and justifies at least two planning tools, then completes the central planning organiser: project outcome and specifications, task sequence, roles, time estimates, resources, hazards and controls, stakeholder needs, quality-control checks, dependencies and three critical review points. Students use a shared paper or digital plan and ensure every task has an owner and evidence of completion.

  5. 80–100 min · Review checkpoint and refinement. Teacher uses the critical-review discussion slides to run a structured “client and project manager” review. One student remains to present while other group members rotate to review another plan, asking: “Is the sequence achievable?”, “Which resource or task is critical?”, and “How will quality be checked?” Students record feedback, then revise one goal, resource, planning tool or task sequence and explain the reason for the change.

  6. 100–115 min · Individual application and assessment. Teacher asks students to independently complete the final section of the project planning organiser, applying the group learning to their own current infrastructure project. Students produce a short action plan or Gantt-chart extract containing at least six tasks, two dependencies, named resources, one quality-control procedure and two dated review points, followed by a paragraph explaining how the plan will manage time and materials.

  7. 115–120 min · Plenary and exit check. Teacher displays the final prompts in the reflection and plenary slides and collects a brief response. Students state which planning tool they selected, justify its suitability, identify one change made after feedback and describe one way their plan could use time or materials more efficiently.
