Overview
Students explore how a volcano can erupt by creating a safe baking soda and vinegar model. They connect their observations to Rūaumoko, the Māori atua associated with earthquakes and volcanic activity, while learning that the model represents some features of an eruption but is not a real volcano.

Lesson structure (30 minutes)
- 0–4 min · Hook and respectful introduction.
Teacher displays the opening image and question and asks, “What might make material burst out of a volcano?” Introduce Rūaumoko as an atua connected with earthquakes and volcanoes in Māori traditions; explain that today’s model is a respectful science investigation, not a recreation of Rūaumoko.
Students share an initial idea with a partner and listen for the learning intention. Establish the safety rule: no tasting, touching eyes, or leaning over the model.
- 4–8 min · Teach the science and safety.
Teacher uses the volcano science and safety slides to explain that baking soda and vinegar react and produce carbon dioxide gas. The gas creates bubbles and pressure, pushing the foamy mixture out of the container. Demonstrate the procedure without adding the ingredients.
Students use hand actions to show “reaction”, “gas”, “pressure” and “eruption”, then repeat the safety instructions to a partner.
- 8–11 min · Predict and organise.
Teacher places students in five groups of four and gives each group a tray, small container and measuring equipment. Distribute the volcano investigation sheet and model how to complete the prediction: “I think the mixture will… because…”
Students assign roles: equipment manager, measurer, recorder and safety reporter. Each student records or contributes to the group prediction.
- 11–20 min · Practical investigation.
Teacher displays the investigation instruction slide and supports groups to add two tablespoons of baking soda to the container, followed by a small amount of washing-up liquid and optional food colouring. On the teacher’s signal, groups add approximately 60 mL vinegar and observe from a safe distance.
Students watch carefully, recording what they see, hear and smell on the worksheet. They may draw the eruption and use words such as fizzing, bubbling, foaming, rising, overflowing and spreading. The teacher reminds students not to repeat the reaction or alter quantities without permission.
- 20–26 min · Explain and connect.
Teacher uses the discussion and preparedness slides to guide a brief class discussion: “Where did the gas come from?” “What pushed the foam out?” “How is this model similar to, and different from, a real volcanic eruption?” Discuss community preparedness, including knowing official warnings, following evacuation instructions, having emergency supplies and staying away from dangerous areas.
Students compare observations within groups, complete the explanation sentence on the worksheet, and identify one safe action families or communities could take before volcanic activity.
- 26–30 min · Plenary and assessment.
Teacher displays the final reflection slide and asks students to complete the final response on their worksheet: “The eruption happened because…” and “One preparedness action is…” Invite two or three students to share.
Students hold up one finger for “I need more help”, two for “I understand”, or three for “I can explain it to someone else”. Collect worksheets as evidence of learning.

Assessment
- Listen to predictions and partner explanations for accurate use of gas, pressure and eruption.
- Observe group roles, safe handling, careful observation and respectful participation during the investigation.
- Collect the worksheet and check whether students link the reaction to gas production and name a sensible preparedness action.
Differentiation
- Provide picture-supported word prompts and sentence starters: “I observed…”, “The gas made…”, and “People can prepare by…”
- Scribe students’ ideas or allow labelled drawings, oral responses or dictated explanations.
- Pair students strategically and give clear role cards orally; repeat instructions one step at a time for students needing additional processing support.
- Challenge ready students to explain why changing the amount of vinegar or baking soda might change the amount of foam, while emphasising that quantities must not be changed during this investigation.
