Overview

Students interpret and present information in scaled bar graphs, then use evidence from the graph to make, check and improve statements. The lesson builds on prior learning about collecting data, reading scales and recognising fractions as equal parts of a whole.

Lesson structure (30 minutes)

  1. 0–4 min · Hook and prediction. Teacher displays a bar graph showing Year 4 students’ favourite fruit, with a scale counting in twos, using the hook and prediction slide. Ask: “Which statement might be true, and how could we prove it?” Students silently predict the most popular fruit, share with a partner and explain what they noticed.

  2. 4–9 min · Read the graph. Teacher revisits the features of a bar graph: title, categories, vertical scale, labels and bars. Model reading one bar carefully, pointing out that each mark represents two students, not one; connect a part of the graph to a simple fraction of the total where appropriate. Students identify the scale and answer quick oral questions from the graph-reading slides: “How many chose apples?” and “Which category has fewer than 10?”

  3. 9–13 min · Model useful statements. Teacher models turning observations into evidence-based statements, including: “_____ more students chose ________ than ________.” Demonstrate finding both values, subtracting to calculate the difference, and checking that the sentence matches the graph. Contrast a correct statement with an inaccurate one and ask students to agree or disagree. Students rehearse one statement with a partner, using the sentence starter and the words data, bar graph and scale.

  4. 13–23 min · Investigate and present. Teacher places students in five groups of five and distributes the scaled bar graph investigation worksheet. Students interpret two related bar graphs and complete the questions: identify values, compare categories, select statements that best answer the investigative question, and explain whether findings match the initial prediction. Each group then creates or completes a scaled bar chart from the provided data, including a title, category labels and an appropriate scale. Students must write two comparison statements and check another group’s statements for accuracy.

  5. 23–27 min · Compare and improve. Teacher displays the discussion prompts in the investigation and discussion slides and invites selected groups to share one statement and its evidence. Students compare findings with their predictions, agree or disagree with another group’s statement, and suggest a precise improvement. Prompt: “What information from the graph helped you decide?” Encourage students to notice that two graphs can show different features of the same data.

  6. 27–30 min · Exit check and reflection. Teacher shows a short final bar graph on the plenary slide and asks students to complete the three-question exit check on the worksheet: read one value, calculate how many more one category has than another, and correct an inaccurate statement. Students finish with: “One thing I now know about reading a scaled bar graph is…”
