Lesson structure (45 minutes)

  1. 0–5 min · Hook and notice. Open with the scale mystery hook and show two close-up scales: one marked every 1 unit and one marked every 10 units. Ask, “Which scale would help you measure most precisely, and how do you know?” Students think independently, then share one observation with a partner.

  2. 5–13 min · Explicit teaching. Use the interval method slides to model a ruler, thermometer, measuring jug and weighing scale. Partners must explain one answer verbally and circle any question where the scale could be interpreted in more than one way. Circulate, checking that students count spaces rather than marks.

  5. 33–40 min · Compare and challenge. Pause the worksheet and return to the compare-and-justify prompts. Pairs compare two answers: “Which instrument is more precise?” and “What information would you need before deciding?” Invite several pairs to justify their thinking, accepting different estimates where students use sound evidence from the scale.

  6. 40–45 min · Plenary and exit check. Show the final scale on the exit question. Students independently state the interval, read the marked value and complete: “This scale is precise to the nearest ___ because…”. Collect responses as they leave and briefly revisit any widespread misconception.
