Lesson structure (120 minutes)

  1. 0–10 min · Hook and prior knowledge. Teacher displays a photograph of a damaged or incorrectly used hand tool through the opening hazard image and asks, “What could go wrong, and who is responsible for preventing it?” Students individually identify hazards, then share observations with a partner; teacher records prior knowledge without confirming answers yet.

  2. 10–30 min · Direct teaching: tools and conventions. Teacher uses the tool identification and safety slides to introduce a handsaw, tenon saw, claw hammer, mallet, screwdrivers, combination square, tape measure, pliers, spanners and file.   3. 30–45 min · Demonstration and questioning. Teacher models a pre-use check, correct PPE, safe movement around the workshop, clamping a workpiece, controlled tool use, cleaning and storage. Students use “hazard, risk, control” language to explain each correction and record one high-risk action on their worksheet.

  1. 90–108 min · School and industry comparison. Teacher leads a discussion using the school-to-industry comparison slides. Compare classroom controls—teacher authorisation, limited access, close supervision and school procedures—with industrial controls such as site induction, documented risk assessment, competency requirements, maintenance systems, signage and responsibility under workplace health and safety law. Students complete a short written response: “Choose one tool. Explain how its safe use would be managed differently in a school workshop and an industrial workplace.”

  2. 108–120 min · Review and exit assessment. Teacher revisits the opening image and asks students to apply their learning, then displays the final prompts on the plenary and exit-ticket slide. Students complete the final worksheet questions and submit an exit response naming one tool, its correct use, one hazard and one effective control. Finish with a brief equipment and workspace check before dismissal.
