Teaching Instructions

LEarners have been working on the language of shape and identifying faces, edges, vertices etc. They have also learnt language like translation etc. I would like to do a 60 minute 'explore session' where learners draw 3D shapes (from models that we have in class) and label their attributes.

The task should go some way to meet this year 4 goal: SPATIAL REASONING: Visualising 3D shapes and connecting them with 2D diagrams, verbal descriptions, and the same shapes drawn from different perspectives. This year 5 goal: SHAPES: Identifying, classifying, and describing the attributes of prisms, using cross sections, faces, edges, and vertices.

And this year 6 goal: SHAPES: Identifying, classifying, and explaining similarities and differences between 2D shapes (including different types of triangles and quadrilaterals) and between prisms and pyramids.

Can you write a brief lesson plan. It should be realtively simple as this lesson will be picked up by a release teacher.

Overview

In this 60-minute explore session, learners use classroom 3D models to draw shapes from different viewpoints and label their attributes. The lesson builds on prior learning about faces, edges, vertices and transformations, while developing connections between physical models, 2D diagrams and mathematical descriptions. Work in six groups of five, with each group sharing a small selection of models.

Lesson structure (60 minutes)

  1. 0–5 min · Hook and purpose. Teacher displays a cube, cuboid and triangular prism, then opens the shape sketch introduction slides and asks, “How can a flat drawing show a solid object?” Students quietly sketch one model from memory, then share what makes the drawing look three-dimensional.

  2. 5–13 min · Model accurate sketching. Teacher demonstrates drawing a cuboid: front face first, parallel depth lines second, then the back face; model how to use dotted lines for hidden edges and how to label one face, edge and vertex. Students identify which parts of the demonstration are 2D and which features represent depth.

  3. 13–18 min · Explore the models. Teacher places one or two models at each group and reminds learners to handle them carefully, rotate them and look from above, the side and an angle. Students discuss and record the model’s name, number of faces, edges and vertices before drawing.

  4. 18–40 min · Draw and label. Teacher distributes the 3D shape observation and sketch sheet and supports groups of five; each learner chooses at least two models and draws each from two different viewpoints. Students label faces, edges and vertices, use dotted lines where appropriate, and add a short description of each shape.

  5. 40–52 min · Compare and reason. Teacher pauses the class and displays the discussion prompts from the comparison and reasoning slides: “What changed when the model was rotated?” “Which features stayed the same?” “How could you tell whether a shape was a prism or a pyramid?” Students compare drawings with a partner, then answer one prompt on their worksheet. Year 4 learners focus on viewpoint and clear descriptions; Year 5 learners classify prisms and identify possible cross sections; Year 6 learners compare a prism and pyramid and explain similarities and differences.

  6. 52–60 min · Share and exit check. Teacher invites two or three learners to show different drawings and uses the sharing and exit-question slides to revisit the learning intentions. Students complete an oral or written exit response: “A good 3D drawing needs ___ because ___.” They also name one attribute that helps classify a prism or pyramid.

  • Collect the worksheet and check for two viewpoints, labelled attributes and a comparison statement. Use the exit response to identify learners needing further practice with perspective, classification or vocabulary.

Differentiation

  • Support learners with a model placed directly in front of them, a partially completed first drawing, a vocabulary bank and sentence starters such as “This shape has…” and “When I rotate it…”.
  • Encourage learners who need fine-motor support to use a ruler and larger models, and allow oral recording of descriptions while a partner or teacher scribes.
  • Challenge confident learners to draw the same model from three viewpoints, show hidden edges consistently, or sketch and discuss a possible cross section.
  • For Year 6 extension within the task, ask learners to compare a prism and pyramid using at least two similarities and two differences, including their bases and faces. Pair learners strategically so mathematical talk is shared without one learner completing the drawing for another.
