Lesson Overview

In this 60-minute lesson, Year 7 students will create a Silhouette Animal Landscape using reference images and acrylic paints. They will focus on shape, proportion, and contrast while developing their artistic voice. The lesson integrates colour blending techniques to create a vibrant sunset or twilight effect and emphasises the importance of silhouette in visual storytelling.

Lesson Breakdown (60 Minutes)

1. Introduction & Inspiration (10 minutes)

• Teacher Discussion: Introduce the concept of silhouettes in art. Show examples of silhouette animal landscapes, including Māori and Pasifika interpretations of nature in art.
• Class Discussion: Ask students:
  • Why do artists use silhouettes?
  • How does colour in the background influence mood?
• Cultural Connection: Briefly explore how Māori and Pasifika artists depict animals in their work, considering patterns and storytelling.

2. Selecting & Sketching Silhouettes (15 minutes)

• Step 1: Provide students with tablets or printouts to select a New Zealand animal (e.g., Kiwi, Tūī, Pīwakawaka, Kererū).
• Step 2: Guide students to focus on the shape, not details, tracing an outline on scrap paper.
• Step 3: Transfer their final silhouette onto A4 or A3 canvas paper using pencil, ensuring proper proportion and placement.

3. Blended Background Painting (15 minutes)

• Demonstration: Show how to blend acrylic paints to create a smooth background. Example themes:
  • Sunset (reds, oranges, blues)
  • Twilight (purples, deep blues, pinks)
• Students: Apply blending techniques to fill the entire background, ensuring even coverage.

4. Painting the Silhouette (15 minutes)

• Step 1: Mix a deep black or navy for best contrast.
• Step 2: Carefully paint inside the sketched silhouette using a small brush, focusing on clean edges.
• Step 3: Add final touches—students may choose to include subtle details like grounded shadows or light fades.

5. Reflection & Clean-Up (5 minutes)

• Peer Feedback: Ask students to share their work with a partner to discuss colour choice and silhouette impact.
• Classroom Clean-Up: Ensure brushes are rinsed, and palettes are wiped for the next use.
