In lesson 13 of 14 in Statistical Skills Unleashed, students investigate how statistics influence public discussion, policy and personal decisions. They apply prior learning about data displays, variation, sampling and interpreting claims to evaluate the strength and significance of statistics in real social contexts.

Lesson structure (60 minutes)

  1. 0–7 min · Hook and prior knowledge. Teacher opens with the provocative statistics hook showing two contrasting headlines based on the same social data, then asks, “Which headline would most influence your decision, and why?” Students silently choose, discuss with a partner and share one reason. Teacher records key ideas such as trust, relevance, sample size, visual design and emotional impact.

  2. 7–15 min · Explicit teaching. Teacher uses the evaluating-statistics teaching slides to revisit five questions: Who collected the data? What was measured? Who was included or excluded? How was the statistic represented? What decision could it influence? Model a short example, such as a survey reporting that “70% of teenagers support a change”, and think aloud about sample size, wording, date, representativeness and possible bias. Students annotate the five questions on the statistics-in-society analysis worksheet.

  3. 15–32 min · Case-study investigation. Teacher forms groups of four and distributes the case-study analysis pages. Each group analyses one age-appropriate case study, such as public transport use, screen time and wellbeing, youth voting, recycling behaviour or access to sport. Students identify the claim, describe the data, check what is missing or uncertain, and decide whether the statistic is useful for decision-making. Assign roles of reader, evidence finder, sceptic and reporter so every student contributes.

  4. 32–44 min · Compare and challenge. Teacher displays the case-study discussion prompts and asks groups to compare their findings with another group. Students explain whether they would trust the statistic, what further information they need, and how the statistic might affect different people. Partners must challenge one conclusion respectfully by asking, “What evidence supports that?” or “What limitation could change your view?”

  5. 44–54 min · Societal decision simulation. Teacher presents the decision-making scenario: a local decision-maker has limited funding and must choose between improving a youth recreation space, extending public transport or supporting a community wellbeing programme. Students use the case-study evidence to recommend one option, while recognising that statistics are one part of a decision. Each group gives a 45-second recommendation using the sentence frame: “Our decision is… The most significant evidence is… However, we should be cautious because…”

  6. 54–60 min · Plenary and exit response. Teacher leads a brief recap and records a dyslexia-friendly summary of the class discussion on the board: “Statistics can inform decisions; they do not make decisions alone.” Students complete the final questions on the reflection and exit section: “One way statistics influence society is…” and “One question I should ask before trusting a statistic is…”
