I want to do a lesson on the sun. To include information on the sun, facts, activity to do etc.

Lesson structure (60 minutes)

  1. 0–7 min · Hook and prior knowledge. Open with the hook and mystery image showing a bright, enlarged image of the Sun and ask, “What would change on Earth if the Sun disappeared?” Students make a prediction, then share what they already know; record ideas and questions on the board.

  2. 7–17 min · Direct teaching: Sun facts. Use the Sun facts slides to teach that the Sun is a star, Earth is a planet, the Sun is much closer to Earth than other stars, and the Sun provides light and warmth. Explain that the Sun is at the centre of our Solar System and that planets, including Earth, move around it. Emphasise that diagrams are models and are not drawn to scale. Students complete the “fact, question, surprising idea” boxes on the Sun investigation sheet.

Do not ask students to look at the real Sun or use unsafe heat sources.

  2. 27–43 min · Independent investigation: sunlight supports life. Present the scenario on the living things challenge slide: “A plant is kept in a dark cupboard for several days. What might happen, and why?” Model a simple explanation: plants need sunlight to make sugar, called photosynthesis; this sugar helps them grow. Students complete the evidence and explanation tasks by matching sunlight to plant growth, warmth, seeing and food chains, then write or draw one explanation. For a class of one, confer regularly and ask the student to think aloud rather than waiting for peer discussion.

  3. 43–53 min · Build an evidence-based explanation. Use the explanation builder with the frame: “The Sun is important because ____. I know this because ____.” Students choose one focus—plants, animals, people or Earth—and complete the frame on the worksheet. Prompt for evidence from the demonstration, facts or the plant scenario. Challenge the student to connect sunlight, plants making sugar and animals obtaining energy through food.

  4. 53–60 min · Plenary and exit check. Return to the opening prediction using the final reflection slides. Students explain whether their thinking changed and complete the final three questions on the exit check: “What is the Sun?”, “Name one way the Sun helps life”, and “Why must we protect our eyes from direct sunlight?” Invite the student to read one answer aloud and identify one question for future learning.
