Lesson structure (120 minutes)

  1. 0–10 min · Project hook. Teacher displays a striking image of a construction or product-development team experiencing a communication failure, using the opening scenario slide, and asks, “Can a technically excellent project fail because the team is poorly organised?” Students complete a quick individual response, then share one example of teamwork they have experienced in a practical or infrastructure project.

  2. 10–25 min · Direct teaching: what makes a team effective? Teacher uses the teamwork concepts slides to introduce project roles, shared goals, accountability, communication channels, decision-making, conflict resolution and review points. Students create a two-column note set: “Effective team behaviour” and “Risks to project progress”, adding examples such as unclear ownership, duplicated work, missed deadlines or unsafe practice.

  3. 25–40 min · Role and responsibility analysis. Teacher distributes the project teamwork analysis worksheet and models how to distinguish a role from a responsibility—for example, “quality lead” compared with “check dimensions against specifications”. Students work in pairs to analyse four project roles: project coordinator, technical lead, resource and safety lead, and quality and testing lead. They identify the decisions each role may make, the information each role needs, and how the roles must communicate.

  4. 40–70 min · Team project challenge. Teacher forms groups of four or five and introduces the scenario on the team challenge instructions: plan a small community infrastructure outcome, such as a modular seating area, storage unit or pedestrian shelter, within a limited time, budget and material supply. Students select or are assigned roles, agree on a conceptual outcome, identify specifications and constraints, and complete the planning section of the worksheet. Each student records their own responsibilities, required resources, dependencies and one critical review point.

  5. 70–95 min · Teamwork simulation and review. Teacher introduces a change card from the disruption and review slides—for example, a key material is unavailable, a user requirement changes, or testing identifies a safety issue. Groups hold a formal review meeting. Students explain the impact on goals, resources, timing and quality, decide what to change, update their plan, and record the decision and reasons. The teacher circulates, questioning: “Who owns this action?”, “What evidence supports that decision?” and “How will you know the revised plan is working?”

  6. 95–110 min · Team reports and peer critique. Teacher asks each group to give a two-minute report using the reporting prompts, covering roles, the main teamwork risk, the response to the disruption and one improvement to their process. Students listen to another group and provide one strength and one specific recommendation, focusing on effective management, resource use, communication and quality control.

  7. 110–120 min · Individual reflection and exit assessment. Teacher returns students to the final prompts on the plenary slides and asks them to complete the final section of the worksheet independently. Students answer: “Which teamwork decision most affected project success?”, “What would I do differently in a future project?”, and “How did our plan help manage time, resources or quality?” Collect responses as evidence of individual understanding.
