Lesson structure (60 minutes)

  1. 0–7 min · Visual hook and recap. Open with the introduction and visual hook slides showing two photographs of the same subject—one centred and one positioned on a third—and ask, “Which image feels more balanced, and why?” Students briefly revisit the previous lesson’s ideas about observation and framing, then make a quick prediction about how moving the camera changes an image.

  2. 7–17 min · Demonstration and explicit teaching. Use the composition teaching slides to define the rule of thirds, visual balance, symmetry, axis, viewpoint and alignment. Demonstrate turning on camera gridlines, holding the camera level, checking the edges of the frame, changing height and distance, and moving rather than relying only on zoom. Model photographing one origami figure in three ways: centred, on a third, and symmetrically aligned. Students identify the compositional choice and suggest one improvement.

  3. 17–22 min · Planning and safety briefing. Distribute the photography planning and peer-review sheet and explain the three required sets: 10 origami images using thirds, 10 images of buildings, people or landscape using deliberate placement, and five symmetrical compositions. Students work in groups of three or four, assign photographer, subject/arranger, equipment monitor and checker roles, and plan locations. Reinforce respectful photography: ask permission before photographing people, do not photograph anyone who declines, and follow school device and movement expectations.

  4. 22–39 min · Photographing thirds and balance. Return to the activity instruction slides and send groups to photograph their first 20 images. For wet weather, students photograph classroom architecture, windows, doorways, desks, still-life arrangements and origami instead of moving around the school.

  5. 39–49 min · Symmetry challenge. Demonstrate on the symmetry challenge slide how a central axis, repeated shapes or reflected forms can create strong taurite. Students make five symmetrical compositions, carefully aligning the camera with the subject. They should test at least two viewpoints and select the clearest version of each composition. Encourage students to notice near-symmetry and explain whether an imbalance is deliberate or accidental.

  6. 49–57 min · Peer review and discussion. Groups share selected images with another group, using the photography planning and peer-review sheet to record feedback. Reviewers identify the strongest example of thirds and the strongest symmetrical image, then comment on clarity, balance, alignment and viewpoint. Require one specific observation and one actionable suggestion, using sentence frames such as: “I notice…”, “The taurite is created by…”, and “You could improve the composition by…”

  7. 57–60 min · Plenary and evidence of learning. Reopen the plenary and reflection slide and ask students to hold up or describe one image that best demonstrates a deliberate compositional choice. Students complete the final reflection on the photography planning and peer-review sheet: “My most successful choice was… because…” and “Next time I will change…”
