Lesson structure (45 minutes)

  1. 0–5 min · Hook and notice. Display the opening graph comparison showing the same weekly temperature data with two different vertical scales. Ask, “Do these graphs tell exactly the same story?” Students think, pair and share what they notice about the pattern, scale and possible message.

  2. 5–12 min · Explicit teaching. Use the graph features and pattern examples to model a time-series graph: time is plotted along the horizontal axis, the measured variable and unit on the vertical axis, and points are plotted before being joined.   6. 40–45 min · Plenary and exit check. Show the final challenge and reflection: a graph with one unusual point and ask students to identify the overall trend and the interruption. Students complete the final response on the worksheet: “The data shows… I know because…” Collect responses to identify students needing further support before lesson 21.
