Teaching Instructions

I want to focus on converting fractions to decimals for 9 year old students. This will be the first time we have covered decimals in our fractions unit.

We have fractions blocks that also show their decimal value, as well as decipipes. I want them to have a conceptual understanding of the topic

Understanding Decimals

Curriculum Area and Level

  • Curriculum Area: Mathematics and Statistics
  • Level: 3 (Year 5-6)
  • Achievement Objective: Number and Algebra - Number knowledge and strategies: Understand fractions, decimals, and percentages.

Learning Intentions

  • Students will gain a conceptual understanding of how to convert fractions to decimals.
  • Students will be able to use fraction blocks and decipipes to visualise the relationship between fractions and decimals.

Success Criteria

  • Students can accurately convert simple fractions (like 1/2, 1/4, 3/4) to decimals.
  • Students can explain the relationship between fractions and decimals using appropriate mathematical language.

Materials Needed

  • Fraction blocks, including their decimal values
  • Decipipes
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Worksheets with fraction-to-decimal conversion problems

Lesson Outline

1. Introduction (5 Minutes)

  • Greeting and Objective Setting:
    • Welcome students and briefly explain what they will learn today.
    • "Today, we are going to learn how to convert fractions into decimals. This will help us understand another way to express parts of a whole."

2. Direct Instruction (10 Minutes)

  • Explanation:
    • Use the whiteboard to show a simple fraction like 1/2. Draw a pie chart divided into two equal parts, shading one part to illustrate the fraction.
    • Introduce the concept that fractions can also be represented as decimals. Explain that 1/2 is the same as 0.5.
    • Show the fraction block for 1/2 and its decimal value. Explain that the block helps us see that 1/2 is the same as 0.5.
  • Demonstration:
    • Use decipipes to show the conversion of 1/4 to decimals. "When we divide a whole into four equal parts, each part is 1/4 or 0.25."

3. Guided Practice (10 Minutes)

  • Activities with Fraction Blocks:
    • Distribute fraction blocks and decipipes to students.
    • Ask students to work in pairs to convert the following fractions into decimals using blocks and decipipes: 1/2, 1/4, 3/4.
    • Walk around the room, observe student interactions, and provide guidance where necessary.

4. Independent Practice (5 Minutes)

  • Worksheets:
    • Provide a worksheet with simple fractions and their corresponding decimals.
    • Ask students to complete the worksheet individually to reinforce their understanding of the topic.

5. Conclusion (5 Minutes)

  • Review and Reflect:
    • Quickly review the main points: converting fractions to decimals and visualising them using fraction blocks and decipipes.
    • Ask students to share one thing they learned about fractions and decimals today.
    • Provide positive feedback and encouragement.

Differentiation

  • Support: Pair students who need extra help with stronger students. Provide additional manipulatives if needed.
  • Challenge: Ask advanced students to convert more complex fractions (like 2/5 or 3/8) to decimals and explain their reasoning.

Assessment

  • Formative: Observe students during the guided practice and review their worksheets to check for understanding.
  • Summative: Use a brief exit ticket where students convert one fraction to a decimal.

Reflection

  • Teacher Notes: Reflect on what worked well and what could be improved for future lessons. Adjust the lesson plan based on student performance and feedback.

This lesson plan aims to impress teachers by being hands-on, engaging, and grounded in the New Zealand Curriculum, ensuring a deep conceptual understanding of converting fractions to decimals.
