Lesson structure (45 minutes)

  1. 0–5 minutes – Hook: What makes food technology? Open with the introduction slides and show a striking image sequence of fruit changing into a baked product. Ask: “Is food technology only cooking, or is it also designing, testing and making choices?” Students complete a quick think-pair-share. Introduce the unit title, From Fruit to Baking, and explain that the class will design and make food products over the coming lessons.

  2. 5–11 minutes – Course introduction and expectations Use the course expectations slides to outline the 30-lesson journey: hygiene and safety, ingredients, equipment, food design, practical production, testing and reflection. Co-construct three class expectations: be safe, be prepared and be respectful. Clarify that students must follow teacher instructions, walk in the kitchen, tie back hair, wear suitable clothing, wash hands and report spills, allergies or injuries immediately.

  3. 11–21 minutes – Kitchen orientation Take students on a controlled visual tour of the kitchen, or use labelled photographs on the kitchen layout slides if movement is not suitable. Identify preparation benches, sinks, cooking areas, storage, cleaning stations, first-aid and fire-safety equipment. Students complete the matching and labelling tasks on the kitchen orientation worksheet. Emphasise that equipment is used only after instructions and that electrical equipment, heat and sharp tools require particular care.

  4. 21–30 minutes – Equipment and safe choices Display the equipment images in the equipment safety slides. In pairs, students select four familiar items from the worksheet and record their purpose and one safe-use rule. Invite pairs to share one response. Correct misconceptions, especially around carrying knives, handling hot trays, using appliances and cleaning equipment. Reinforce that “safe” includes checking the workspace, using equipment correctly and leaving the area ready for the next group.

  5. 30–39 minutes – Teamwork routine Assign groups of four and introduce rotating roles: equipment manager, hygiene manager, recorder and reporter. Groups discuss the prompt on the teamwork discussion slides: “What would happen if one person ignored their responsibility?” They create a short group agreement with two actions that will help them work safely and fairly. Groups share one agreement; the teacher records common commitments for future practical lessons.

  6. 39–45 minutes – Review and exit check Return to the plenary slides and revisit the opening question. Students independently complete the final section of the kitchen orientation worksheet: define food technology, name one kitchen zone, state one safety rule and explain one teamwork behaviour. Invite two or three responses, collect worksheets and preview the next lesson on hygiene, cross-contamination and safe food handling.
