Lesson structure (60 minutes)

  1. 0–7 min · Hook and introduction. Teacher rolls a toy car, wheel, and non-wheeled object across the floor, then opens the wheel wonder introduction slides and asks, “Why might people choose wheels?” Students observe, predict, and share examples of wheels they have seen at home, school, or in the community. Explain that groups will rotate through four exploration stations and that careful testing matters more than making the “best” object.

  2. 7–12 min · Safety and modelling. Teacher demonstrates how to carry materials, keep wheels on the floor, take turns, and use the recording sheet.   4. 20–28 min · Station 2 – Make a spinner. Students create a spinner, test how long or smoothly it turns, and try one change such as a larger circle, a different centre hole, or added decoration. They draw their design and circle “smooth”, “wobbly”, or “stopped quickly” on the wheel exploration recording sheet.

  5. 28–36 min · Station 3 – Wheels carry things. Teacher sets out small boxes, cups, blocks, toy animals, tape, and wheeled bases or bottle-top wheels. Students design a way to move a small object from one line to another, testing whether the object stays on and whether the design rolls. They may use an existing toy vehicle as inspiration, but must explain what part helps it move. Students share one successful feature with their group.

  6. 36–44 min · Station 4 – Wheel art and patterns. Teacher provides washable paint, shallow trays, paper, and wheels of different sizes or textured toy vehicles. Students roll or press wheels through paint to create tracks and patterns, comparing wide/narrow, smooth/bumpy, straight/curved, and fast/slow marks. They choose a favourite pattern and explain which wheel made it. Keep paint at the station and provide a drying area.

  7. 44–52 min · Revisit and improve. Teacher pauses the rotations and returns to the observation and discussion slides. Students revisit one station idea, make one improvement or repeat one test, then complete the final drawing or sentence on the wheel exploration recording sheet. Prompt with: “What changed?”, “What stayed the same?”, and “What was the wheel helping us do?”

  8. 52–60 min · Share and assess. Each group shares one discovery using “We noticed…” and “We think…”. Teacher records children’s ideas on the board under “moves”, “spins”, “carries”, and “makes patterns”, then uses the closing reflection slide for a quick whole-class reflection. Students show thumbs up, sideways, or down for: “I tested an idea”; “I used materials safely”; and “I can explain one thing a wheel does.”
