This ultra-compact, high-impact session is designed to embed a single powerful language-learning strategy through an energising, hyper-focused vocabulary-building micro-activity.

Learning Intentions

Students will:

• Activate prior knowledge of target vocabulary.
• Recognise and recall key vocabulary related to the unit theme.
• Apply new or revised vocabulary in a rapid, engaging context.

• Identify key vocabulary accurately.
• Use at least 1–2 new or targeted words in correct context.
• Engage in a fast-paced language activity with confidence.

Materials

• Mini whiteboards and markers (or paper if unavailable)
• A “word burst” list prepared by the teacher (7-10 key vocabulary items)
• A digital or physical timer set to 1-minute
• Dynamic teacher energy!

Target Vocabulary Theme

Topic: Identity & Culture
Vocabulary Focus: Words commonly used to describe self, family, and cultural practices.
(Examples: tūrangawaewae, whakapapa, whānau, friend, language, place, hobby, tradition, describe, belong)

Session Sequence (1 Minute)

Time	Activity	Description
0:00–0:15s	Instant Vocabulary Flash	Teacher rapidly calls out vocabulary words. Students write down their meanings (in English or the target language) on mini whiteboards or paper. Encourage speed AND accuracy.
0:15–0:30s	Snap Use	Teacher challenges the class with a sentence stem such as: “At home I like to ________.” Students race to complete it using one of the vocabulary words. Share a few aloud.
0:30–0:45s	Turbo Translate	Pick one word from the “word burst” list and ask students to translate it into the target language or a language they speak at home (for multilingual connections).
0:45–1:00s	Vocab Victory	Students raise boards in the air with their favourite new word and one symbol (e.g. 👏✨👀) to show how confident they feel with it. Teacher scans for common trends and celebrates effort.

Differentiation

• Support: Provide a visual word wall or prompt sheet for ELLs or learners needing more time.
