Design, Make, Innovate: The Design Process
Years 2-3 Technology Learning the 5 Steps of Design
What is a Problem?
Think about our puppet friend She can't reach her favorite book! How do you think she feels? What could we do to help her?
The 5 Steps of Design
1. Empathize - Understand the problem 2. Define - Say exactly what's wrong 3. Ideate - Think of lots of ideas 4. Prototype - Make something 5. Test - Try it out and improve
Step 1: Empathize
Listen to our puppet's story How does she feel? What does she need? Put yourself in her shoes!
Step 2: Define & Step 3: Ideate
Define: 'Our puppet can't reach the book on the top shelf' Now let's brainstorm! Think of ALL the ideas - even silly ones! Draw or write your ideas
Step 4: Prototype
Time to build! Use craft materials to make your idea Work together in your groups Remember - it doesn't have to be perfect!
Step 5: Test
Show how your prototype works Test it with our puppet friend What works well? What could be better?
Remember: Design is About Trying and Improving!
Every great invention started with someone trying to solve a problem It's okay if your first idea doesn't work perfectly The best designers keep learning and trying new things
