What We'll Learn Today
Discover the difference between beat and rhythm Learn basic rhythmic values: crotchet, quaver, and rests Practice with clapping and body percussion Play simple instruments together Perform rhythmic patterns as a group
Warm-Up: Feel Your Heartbeat!
Place your hand on your heart Feel the steady beat - thump, thump, thump Now let's clap along with that steady beat This is what we call the BEAT in music!
Beat vs Rhythm: What's the Difference?
{"left":"BEAT: The steady pulse that never changes\nLike a heartbeat - always the same\nKeeps the music moving forward","right":"RHYTHM: Patterns of long and short sounds\nCan be fast or slow, loud or quiet\nDances on top of the beat"}
Meet the Musical Notes!
Crotchet (Quarter Note) = 1 beat Quaver (Eighth Note) = ½ beat Rest = Silence for 1 beat These are the building blocks of rhythm!
Clap and Move Challenge!
Clap 4 crotchets: clap, clap, clap, clap Try 4 quavers: clap-clap, clap-clap Add a rest: clap, clap, (silence), clap Now use your whole body - stomp, pat, snap!
Time for Instruments!
Work in groups of 4-5 students Choose drums, claves, or other percussion Pick a rhythmic pattern we learned Practice keeping a steady beat together Take turns being the group leader
Group Performance Time!
Each group performs their rhythmic pattern Audience listens for the steady beat Notice how rhythm dances on top of the beat Celebrate everyone's musical creativity!
Quick Quiz: Can You Remember?
What's the difference between beat and rhythm? How many beats does a crotchet get? What about a quaver? When do we use a rest?
