GEMA: Mastering Multiplication, Division, and Exponents
Year 9 Mathematics Lesson 2: Multiplicative Thinking 45 minutes

Learning Intentions & Success Criteria
WALT (We Are Learning To): Apply GEMA to solve complex expressions involving multiplication, division, and exponents Success Criteria: I can identify the correct order for multiplication and division Success Criteria: I can work left to right when operations have equal priority Success Criteria: I can integrate exponents correctly within GEMA Success Criteria: I can solve multi-step problems independently

GEMA Reminder
G - Grouping symbols (brackets) E - Exponents (powers) M - Multiplication A - Addition D - Division S - Subtraction

Key Focus: Multiplication & Division Priority
Multiplication and Division have EQUAL priority When you see both, work LEFT to RIGHT Example: 12 ÷ 3 × 4 Step 1: 12 ÷ 3 = 4 Step 2: 4 × 4 = 16 NOT: 12 ÷ (3 × 4) = 12 ÷ 12 = 1

Class Practice: Left to Right
Work together on these examples: a) 20 ÷ 4 × 5 b) 6 × 8 ÷ 2 c) 15 ÷ 3 × 2 ÷ 5 Show your working step by step

Integrating Exponents into GEMA
Exponents come BEFORE multiplication and division Example: 2 × 3² + 4 Step 1: Calculate 3² = 9 Step 2: 2 × 9 = 18 Step 3: 18 + 4 = 22 Remember: Exponents are powerful!

More Complex Examples
{"left":"Example 1: 4 + 2³ × 5\nStep 1: 2³ = 8\nStep 2: 8 × 5 = 40\nStep 3: 4 + 40 = 44\nExample 2: 6² ÷ 9 + 3 × 2","right":"Step 1: 6² = 36\nStep 2: 36 ÷ 9 = 4\nStep 3: 3 × 2 = 6\nStep 4: 4 + 6 = 10"}

Quick Check Understanding
Which operation do you do first? 8 + 2⁴ ÷ 4 × 3 A) 8 + 2⁴ B) 2⁴ ÷ 4 C) 4 × 3 Think, pair, share your answer!

Independent Practice
Solve these problems independently: 1) 5 × 2³ - 8 2) 24 ÷ 6 × 2 + 1 3) 3² + 4 × 5 ÷ 2 4) (Extension) 2 × 3² + 4³ ÷ 8 Show all working steps

Lesson Summary & Next Steps
Today we mastered: Multiplication & Division equal priority (left to right) Exponents come first in GEMA Step-by-step problem solving Next lesson: Adding brackets and complex grouping Homework: Practice sheet - 10 problems Remember: GEMA is your mathematical GPS!
