The Story: Māui Fishes Up the Land
Māui wanted to fish with his brothers but they refused to take him He hid in their waka and surprised them at sea Using his grandmother's magical jawbone as a hook, Māui caught something enormous The 'fish' was actually the North Island of New Zealand Māui warned his brothers not to touch or cut the fish while he performed karakia The brothers ignored his warning and began cutting up the fish Their actions created the mountains, valleys, and rough landscape we see today
