Math and English Learning Adventures
An exciting journey through shapes, numbers, and reading skills For Year 4-6 students New Zealand Curriculum
What Are We Learning Today?
Explore amazing shapes and their properties Discover rational numbers and how they work Practice reading skills like summarising Learn to draw conclusions from what we read Use evidence to support our thinking
Learning Connection
Mathematics and English work together like puzzle pieces - they help us solve problems and share our discoveries with others!
Amazing Shapes Around Us
Circles: wheels, coins, pizza slices Rectangles: books, doors, tablets Triangles: rooftops, warning signs, pizza slices Squares: windows, chess boards, tiles These shapes have special properties we can measure and describe
Shape Detective Challenge
Find 3 circles in our classroom Spot 2 rectangles on your desk Look for 1 triangle anywhere in the room Draw each shape you find Write one sentence describing each shape's properties
Understanding Rational Numbers
Fractions show parts of a whole: 1/2, 1/4, 3/4 Decimals are another way to show parts: 0.5, 0.25, 0.75 We use these numbers in cooking, sports, and shopping They help us be precise when whole numbers aren't enough
Reading Like Detectives
{"left":"Summarising: Finding the main ideas in a story or text\nDrawing Conclusions: Using clues from the text to figure out what happens next","right":"Making Inferences: Reading between the lines to understand what the author really means\nUsing Evidence: Finding specific examples in the text to support our ideas"}
Think and Discuss
If you read a story about a character who keeps checking their watch and tapping their foot, what can you infer about how they're feeling? What evidence from the text supports your inference?
Math Story Problems
Read this problem carefully: Sarah has 2/4 of a chocolate bar. She gives 1/4 to her brother. How much chocolate does she have left? Summarise the problem in your own words Draw a picture to show the fractions Write your answer with evidence from your drawing
Our Learning Adventure Summary
We explored shapes and their properties in our world We learned about rational numbers (fractions and decimals) We practiced reading skills: summarising, inferring, and using evidence We discovered how math and English work together Keep being curious learners and problem solvers!
