Quick Review: What We Already Know
Subject and predicate in sentences Sentence expansion techniques FANBOYS coordinating conjunctions Compound sentences with 'because', 'but', 'so' Today we're learning something NEW!
Meet the Subordinating Conjunctions
because although when if while since
FANBOYS vs Subordinating Conjunctions
{"left":"FANBOYS join TWO equal ideas\nMake COMPOUND sentences\nBoth parts can stand alone\nExample: Emperor penguins swim well, but they cannot fly","right":"Subordinating conjunctions join unequal ideas\nMake COMPLEX sentences\nOne part depends on the other\nExample: Emperor penguins huddle together because Antarctica is freezing"}
Independent vs Dependent Clauses
Can this stand alone as a complete sentence? ✅ Emperor penguins huddle together (This is an INDEPENDENT clause) ❌ because Antarctica is freezing (This is a DEPENDENT clause)
Complex Sentence Formula
Independent clause + subordinating conjunction + dependent clause OR Subordinating conjunction + dependent clause + independent clause Both ways create COMPLEX sentences!
Complex Sentence Examples
Emperor penguins huddle together because Antarctica is freezing. Although emperor penguins cannot fly, they are excellent swimmers. When winter arrives, emperor penguins protect their eggs. Emperor penguins stay warm while they huddle together.
Your Turn: Create Complex Sentences
Use these sentence starters: Emperor penguins huddle together because... Although emperor penguins... When winter arrives... Emperor penguins stay warm while... Since Antarctica is freezing...
Let's Share and Reflect
Share one of your complex sentences Which part is the independent clause? Which part is the dependent clause? Which subordinating conjunction did you use? Remember: Subordinating conjunctions create complex sentences!
