🧭 Teacher Notes — WALT, Success Criteria & Differentiation

WALT: We Are Learning To use bridging to ten to add numbers quickly and show our thinking.

Success criteria:

— I can make ten first using blocks or drawings.

— I can write an addition sentence that shows 10 being made (for example 7 + 5 = 7 + 3 + 2 = 10 + 2 = 12).

— I can explain my steps in one sentence to a partner.

Differentiation strategies:

— Support: Provide linking cubes and number-line, allow drawing or physical blocks for every question.

— Scaffold: Give the first blank in the bridging sentence for students who need it.

— Advanced: Ask learners to find two or more bridging methods (see Q9) and try bridging with subtraction.

Extension activities:

— Create bridging sentences for three-digit totals using tens (e.g., 27 + 8).

— Challenge: Find two ways to show 9 + 7 and explain which is fastest and why.

Dyslexia-friendly reading options:

— Read instructions aloud and display one step at a time.

— Use coloured counters and high-contrast number cards; allow oral responses and drawings.
