Introduction to Measurement

Help plan a low-waste kai stall for a community sports day. Use metric units, show calculations where useful, and include units in every measurement.

Plan the measurements

1.The stall needs to measure the length of a table, the mass of a bag of apples, and the capacity of a drink dispenser. For each, choose a suitable tool: tape measure, kitchen scales, or measuring jug.
  • Length of table
  • Mass of apples
  • Capacity of dispenser
  • Kitchen scales
  • Tape measure
  • Measuring jug
2.Choose the most sensible unit for each measurement: the distance from a nearby town to the sports day (about 2), the mass of one apple (about 180), and the capacity of a reusable bottle (about 750).
3.The temperature at the stall is 18 °C in the morning and 24 °C at lunchtime. How many degrees warmer is it at lunchtime?
4.A sign is 0.85 m wide. Convert its width to centimetres.

Measure, estimate and check

5.A dispenser holds 3 L of water. The cups hold 250 mL each. How many full cups can be filled?
6.The fruit crate has a mass of 2.4 kg. Write this mass in grams.
7.A volunteer says, “The table is 160 long.” Explain why this measurement is incomplete, and give a sensible way to write it.
8.Complete these metric conversions: 1.6 m = cm; 0.5 L = mL; 3500 g = kg.
9.The team estimates that a length of ribbon is 2 m. Measuring it gives 185 cm. What is the difference between the estimate and the measured length, in centimetres?
10.For a planning check, choose one item you can measure at home or outdoors. State what attribute you would measure (length, mass, capacity, temperature or time), a suitable tool and unit, and a reasonable estimate. Do not invent an actual measurement—this is a plan.
