Keychain Design Worksheet

A local maker is preparing a small batch of laser-cut keychains. Plan a clear, safe, original vector design that can be checked before cutting. Use millimetres for dimensions. Example design for analysis: a rounded keychain outline with a small circular hole near the top, the initials “AJ” engraved in the centre, and two short decorative engraved lines below the initials. The outer outline and hole are cut paths; the initials and decorative lines are engraved marks. Create your own concept.

A vector file describes paths and shapes rather than a grid of pixels. A laser cutter can use a closed vector outline as a cut path and other vector marks as engraving instructions. In this workshop, the design limit is 50 mm × 50 mm. The keyring hole should be about 5 mm across, with enough material around it to stay strong. Text may need converting to outlines so another computer does not substitute a different font. Final colour and stroke settings depend on the workshop’s laser-cutter instructions, so always check its specification before exporting or cutting.
