A stream under pressure

Rubbish is caught among plants at the bank, and some sections have little shade. The group agrees to investigate before choosing actions. In te ao Māori, the environment can be understood through relationships and connections. Whakapapa describes lines of relationship and descent, including connections among people, other living things and the natural world. One concept refers to responsibilities of care and guardianship. Mauri is often described as the life force or vitality of a person, place or thing. Mana can refer to authority, standing, prestige or influence; its meaning depends on context. These concepts are not simply interchangeable with scientific terms. The group plans to remove rubbish safely, plant suitable native species along parts of the bank, and check water clarity and fish observations over time. They will seek guidance from local mana whenua and work with them on decisions about the stream. They know that planting may reduce erosion and provide shade over time, but monitoring is needed to find out whether conditions improve.
