Māori Games Vocabulary Introduction

He kōrero: Kēmu Māori

Kia ora koutou! Nau mai ki te rā kēmu. Today, a group is learning about traditional Māori games. Kī-o-rahi is a team game played with a ball. Poi tōrere is a two-player game using poi. Kēmu means “games”. A kaitākaro is a player, and ngā kaitākaro are players. They need taputapu (equipment) and must learn the ture (rules). They practise ngā mahi (the actions) and offer tautoko (support) to one another. Tikanga means customs and values that guide how people act. At the end, the group says, “Ka pai tō mahi!”—“Well done on your work!”
