Order of Operations Practice

Aotearoa Adventure Tours is checking its booking calculator before a busy weekend. Use the order of operations: brackets first, then powers, then multiplication and division from left to right, then addition and subtraction from left to right. Show working for calculation questions.

Warm-up: Spot the First Step

For each expression, identify which operation must be done first. Remember that multiplication and division have equal priority, as do addition and subtraction.

1.In 7 + 4 × 3, which operation should you do first?

A tour booking system combines groups of bookings and adjustments. Work through each expression in the correct order.

4.The system calculates 8 + 3 × 2². Evaluate the expression and show each step.

5.Evaluate (15 − 7) × 3 ÷ 4 + 2. Show the steps, working from left to right when operations have equal priority.

6.A calculator gives 20 − 12 ÷ 3 × 2 = 12. Is the answer correct? Explain the correct left-to-right calculation.
