Te Tiriti o Waitangi was signed on 6 February 1840 at Waitangi in the Bay of Islands. This important document was an agreement between the British Crown and Māori rangatira (chiefs). The treaty was written in both English and te reo Māori, but there were important differences between the two versions.

Te Tiriti promised Māori that they would keep their tino rangatiratanga (sovereignty) over their lands, villages, and treasures. In return, Māori would accept the Queen's kāwanatanga (governorship). The treaty also promised Māori the same rights as British subjects and gave the Crown the right to buy land from Māori.

Over 500 Māori chiefs signed Te Tiriti, though most signed the Māori version. Today, Te Tiriti is considered New Zealand's founding document, but its interpretation and implementation continue to be important issues in our country.
