Lesson Structure
1. Starter Activity – Decimal Warm-Up (10 minutes)

- Which digit is in the pounds place?
- What does the 2 represent?
- How many pence altogether?

Objective: Apply addition of decimal amounts through a practical activity.
- Split the class into pairs or small groups (3 or 4, max 4). Provide each group with a ‘shop’ set-up: items labelled with prices (decimals in £ and p, e.g., £1.45, £2.70, £0.95).
- Give each group several ‘money amounts’ (play money) to ‘buy’ items.
- Pupils take turns to ‘purchase’ 2 or 3 items, adding the prices together using whiteboards to work out the total cost.
- Encourage pupils to write each addition vertically, lining up decimal points, reinforcing correct place value.
