Overview
Duration: 60 minutes
Class Size: 31 students
Unit: Exciting Creation Stories (Lesson 4 of 6)
Topic: Adverbial Phrases of Time and Place
Age Group: Year 3 (7-8 years)
Curriculum Alignment:
- English Program of Study – Writing – Vocabulary, grammar & punctuation (National Curriculum for England)
- Specifically addressing:
- Recognising and using adverbials (pupils should be taught to use expanded noun phrases and adverbial phrases to add detail)
- In Year 3, pupils should learn how to express time, place and cause using conjunctions (e.g. when, before, after, while, so, because) and adverbs (e.g. then, next, soon, therefore)
Learning Objectives
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
- Identify adverbial phrases of time and place within sentences from creation stories. (NC: Develop understanding of adverbials as part of grammar in writing)
- Explain how these adverbial phrases provide extra information about when or where an action takes place.
- Construct their own sentences using adverbial phrases of time and place correctly to enhance meaning.
- Use a range of time and place adverbial phrases to add detail and interest to their writing.
Resources
- Excerpts from creation stories (adapted for Year 3 level with clear adverbial phrases)
- Whiteboard and markers
- Individual mini whiteboards and pens for students
- Adverbial phrase word bank handouts (split by time & place)
- Colour-coded sentence strips (sentences with adverbials highlighted)
- Sticky notes
- “Sentence builder” template worksheets
- Timer or countdown clock visible to all students
Lesson Structure
1. Introduction (10 minutes)
Objective: Activate prior knowledge and introduce adverbial phrases
- Begin by revisiting what adverbs are – ask students aloud for examples of simple adverbs.
- Introduce the idea of adverbial phrases (groups of words that tell us more about the verb, specifically about time and place).
- Show example sentences on the board from creation stories such as:
- "In the beginning, God created the heavens." (Time)
- "The animals lived near the river." (Place)
- Highlight the adverbial phrases in each sentence using different colours (e.g., blue for time, green for place).
- Explain how these phrases help the reader imagine when and where things happen in the story.
Interactive: Quick class brainstorm – students suggest other adverbial phrases of time and place they know or think of. Write these on the board.
2. Guided Practice (15 minutes)
Objective: Identify and categorise adverbial phrases in creation story excerpts
- Hand out sentence strips with sentences from various creation stories containing embedded adverbial phrases of time and place.
- Students work in pairs to:
- Identify the adverbial phrase in each sentence (underline it on their strip).
- Categorise it as either time or place (using sticky notes labelled "Time" or "Place").
- Discuss as a class, compiling a master list of adverbial phrases on the board.
- Emphasise the rich detail these phrases add to stories.
Assessment: Walk around to monitor pair work, listen to discussions, and note any common misunderstandings.
3. Independent Writing Activity (20 minutes)
Objective: Use adverbial phrases of time and place in original sentence writing
- Distribute a “sentence builder” worksheet with three sentence starters related to creation stories (e.g., “The light appeared…”, “The animals gathered…”, “The sun rose…”).
- Provide word banks of adverbial phrases of time (e.g., "at dawn," "before noon," "after the rain") and place (e.g., "in the forest," "beside the lake," "on the mountain").
- Students complete these starters by adding at least one adverbial phrase of time and one of place to each sentence. Encourage them to vary their choices.
- Allow students to use their mini whiteboards to draft and share sentences with a partner before writing on the worksheet.
4. Sharing and Feedback (10 minutes)
Objective: Develop peer and self-assessment skills
- Invite volunteers to read their best sentence aloud.
- As a class, discuss how the adverbial phrases help paint a clearer picture—ask questions such as:
- “Where does this action happen?”
- “When is this taking place?”
- Provide positive, specific feedback highlighting use of adverbials.
- Ask pairs to gently check each other's work for correct placement and spelling of adverbials using a simple checklist (correct phrase? does it tell time or place?).
5. Plenary and Recap (5 minutes)
Objective: Consolidate understanding and key vocabulary
- Use a quick-fire quiz: Teacher gives a phrase, students hold up a ‘Time’ or ‘Place’ card. Example phrases: “before sunrise,” “on the hill,” “after the storm.”
- Summarise key learning points about how adverbial phrases enrich writing and help storytelling.
- Set a light homework challenge: Find three adverbial phrases of time or place in a favourite storybook at home.
Assessment & Differentiation
- Formative assessments through observation in guided practice and peer discussions
- Independent sentence writing used to assess individual grasp of adverbial phrase use
- Support: Provide scaffolds (e.g., sentence starters, word banks) for students needing extra help
- Stretch: Challenge more able learners to combine multiple adverbial phrases in one sentence or use adventurous vocabulary (e.g., “at twilight,” “over the cascading waterfall”)
