Lesson Structure

1. Starter Activity: Precision in Analytical Language (10 minutes)

• Begin with a quick quiz on literary terms relevant to their chosen text (e.g., metaphor, imagery, narrative perspective, symbolism).
• Discuss examples from the student’s text, asking them to give definitions and examples from memory or notes.
• Use this to activate prior knowledge and ensure terminology is ready for confident use in writing.

2. Review and Planning (10 minutes)

• Discuss the chosen text briefly: thematic ideas, key events, characterisation, stylistic features.
• Review the planning scaffold previously completed.
• Together, identify two to three strong analytical points around the text’s language, structure, or presentation techniques.
• Highlight suitable textual quotations that the student plans to use as evidence.

3. Writing the Analytical Response (25 minutes)

• The student writes a complete analytical essay of approximately 300-400 words focused on their chosen text.
• Encourage use of:
• Topic sentences clearly signposting the point being made,
• Embedded quotations with appropriate punctuation and explanation,
• Linking phrases for cohesion (e.g., moreover, however, this suggests),
• Formal analytical tone avoiding colloquialisms and narrative summary.
• Teacher provides periodic prompts on demanding higher-level interpretation and clarity of explanation, ensuring the student articulates ‘how’ and ‘why’ the text achieves its effects.

4. Editing and Refining (10 minutes)

• After completion, the student rereads the essay aloud or silently to check for flow and coherence.
• Teacher and student collaboratively identify areas for improvement in:
• Clarity of argument,
• Sentence variety,
• Accurate spelling, punctuation, and grammar,
• Integration of quotations with analysis.
• The student revises and improves the response, focusing on precision and polish.

5. Plenary and Self-Assessment (5 minutes)

• Student uses a provided checklist to self-assess their work, focusing on:
• Clarity and coherence of each paragraph,
• Effective use of textual evidence,
• Use of literary terminology,
• Formal tone and style,
• Technical accuracy (grammar, spelling, punctuation).
• Final brief oral reflection on what skills they have developed over the unit and how they would apply these to future analytical writing tasks.
