Autumn Reading and Writing

Overview

This 60-minute lesson is designed to develop Year 3 students’ skills in reading comprehension, vocabulary building, sentence writing, and speaking and listening. The lesson aligns with the National Curriculum for England (Years 3), focusing on key English objectives for Term 1 (Autumn).

Learning Objectives

By the end of the lesson, pupils will be able to:

• Reading comprehension:

• Retrieve and record information from fiction texts.

• Make simple inferences about characters and events.

• Predict what might happen next in a story. (National Curriculum: English Programmes of Study – Reading: comprehension, Years 3: Pupils should develop positive attitudes to reading, and understanding of what they read independently and in groups.)

• Vocabulary development:

• Identify and discuss new vocabulary in context, using a dictionary or other reference.

• Writing simple sentences:

• Write clear, grammatically correct sentences that describe characters and settings.

• Use capital letters, full stops, and connectives such as “and” and “but” consistently. (National Curriculum: Writing - Composition – Year 3 objectives.)

• Speaking and listening:

• Participate actively in group discussion, asking and answering relevant questions.

• Express ideas clearly and respectfully listen to others. (National Curriculum: Spoken Language - Years 3 and 4 - Pupils should be taught to articulate and justify answers, arguments and opinions.)

Lesson Structure and Activities

1. Starter (10 minutes) – Book Talk and Vocabulary Treasure Hunt

• Show the class a short, engaging fiction text (e.g., a chapter from a Year 3 level story with rich descriptive language). Read aloud the first paragraph.
• Pause and invite children to spot any new or interesting words. Write these on the board (e.g., “glistening,” “whispered,” “curious”).
• In pairs, pupils use mini-dictionaries or a curated word wall to check meanings and discuss synonyms.
• Whole-class shares a few definitions and examples of when to use these words.

Resources: A printed short fiction text, mini-dictionaries, word wall cards.

2. Main Activity Part 1 (15 minutes) – Reading Comprehension and Prediction

• Hand out copies of the next short passage from the story. Pupils read silently or in pairs.
• Pose comprehension questions such as:
• What is happening in this part of the story?
• How do you think the character feels? What clues tell you?
• What do you think will happen next? Why?
• Encourage pupils to underline key phrases that help them answer.
• Discuss answers as a class, modelling how to use evidence from the text.

Resources: Printed copies of the story passage, highlighters, notebooks.

3. Main Activity Part 2 (20 minutes) – Writing Descriptive Sentences

• Recap vocabulary from the start of the lesson. Model writing 2-3 simple sentences describing a character or setting from the story, incorporating new adjectives and verbs.
• Example: “The curious boy tiptoed into the glistening forest.”
• Pupils then write 3-4 sentences describing either a character or setting, using at least two new vocabulary words.
• Circulate to support spelling, grammar, and sentence construction.

Resources: Writing paper or workbooks, pencils, word bank of adjectives and verbs.

4. Plenary (10 minutes) – Speaking and Listening Carousel

• Pupils form small groups of 4-5. Each pupil reads aloud one of their descriptive sentences.
• Group members listen carefully and ask one question about the sentence (e.g., “Why did you choose the word ‘glistening’?”).
• Rotate through the group so everyone practices speaking and listening skills.
• Finish with a brief whole-class reflection: Which words or sentences did you like best? Why?

Resources: None beyond pupils’ written work.

Assessment and Feedback

• Formative assessment: Monitor paired and group work — note pupils’ ability to explain vocabulary meaning, infer character feelings, and express clear ideas.
• Written assessment: Review written sentences for correct punctuation, use of new vocabulary, simple sentence structure, and adjectives/verbs. Provide written or oral feedback targeting next steps, e.g., more adventurous adjectives or varied connectives.
• Speaking and Listening: Observe participation and quality of questions during the carousel, checking for respectful listening and relevant contributions.

Additional Notes

• Ensure differentiated support for learners who may struggle with vocabulary or sentence writing by providing sentence starters or vocabulary prompts.
• Challenge more able pupils by encouraging use of connectives like “because,” “although,” or “however” in their sentences.
• Create an engaging classroom display of the vocabulary words and pupils’ best sentences to reinforce learning throughout the term.
